PRINCIPAL'S LETTER

Our progress as a nation can be no swifter than our progress in education.

President John F. Kennedy

June 9, 2008

Dear OLV Families,

Many thanks to our 7th grade parents and students who hosted a wonderful 8th grade breakfast last Friday. Mary Cortez and a great group of volunteers worked very hard and all enjoyed a delicious Fiesta breakfast. To all the parents who helped set-up and clean up, thank you and thanks to Shari Palermo, Marilyn Sempelsz, Natalie Hammitt, Kristy Harrigan and  Nellie Mendoza for chairing the various committees. The 7th grade students were outstanding waiters and workers. You will be a great 8th grade class – the Class of 2009!

This is the final family envelope for the year and my last letter.  It has been a very good year with a successful WCEA/WASC Visiting Team Visit.  I am very grateful to the excellent staff the I have the privilege of working with and, of course the great OLV students and parents.

FREE DRESS: On Thursday, students will be cleaning out their desks and getting the  classrooms ready for summer, so they may wear their PE clothes. Friday, students are to wear dressy free dress, that is, modest skirts or dresses for girls and  for boys, long pants (not jeans) and collared shirts (not t-shirts). Students may also choose to wear their full dress uniforms. NO SHORTS OR JEANS FOR ANY STUDENTS.

END OF YEAR AWARDS ASSEMBLY: Friday at 9:15 a.m., you are invited to attend our awards assembly in the church honoring the achievement of students in grades 1-7. At this assembly, approximately 13 awards will be given out to students in each grade.  Not all students will be receiving awards. These awards are given to acknowledge outstanding achievement or effort in specific areas.  Though not every student will receive an award, all students and teachers have discussed in their classrooms the importance of celebrating with one another and rejoicing in the successful completion of another school year. Please help us by reinforcing this at home.

SUMMER SCHOOL: There is still time to enroll in OLV’s Summer School. Registrations forms are available in the school office.

PRE-PAID TUITION: If you chose the option of paying tuition in full for next year instead of enrolling in FACTS, your payment is due Wednesday, June 11th.

2008-2009 STUDENT SUPPLY LISTS: Today, your students will be bringing home their school supply list for next year.  Be sure to look for it. During the summer, we will also post this information on our website and in the display case outside the school office.

FR. ALDEN FAREWELL: We are very sad to say goodbye to Fr. Alden, who has been our pastor for 11 years.  At the 8th grade breakfast on Friday we gave him a gift of a beautiful photograph of the whole school and all staff members. It was almost three feet wide and had the inscription: “With love from your OLV School family - -2008.”  Vaya con Dios, Fr. Alden. We will miss you.

I wish all of you a peaceful summer. Enjoy your time with family and friends. To those who are not returning to OLV, thank you for joining our family for a while. We wish you well. For those who are returning, we will see you back here on Wednesday, august 27th.

God bless you,

Kathleen Delgado, Principal

LAST WEEK'S PRINCIPAL'S LETTER

GOD BLESS ALL OF OUR 2008 GRADUATES—WE WILL MISS YOU!

June 2, 2008

Dear OLV Families,

Well, here we are saying goodbye to another 8th grade class.  They will graduate Friday evening at 6 p.m.  The Class of 2008 was in Kindergarten when I became principal and so we have grown up together these past nine years.  Please keep our graduates in your prayers as they move on to their exciting high school years.

We will also say goodbye to two important staff members, Dora Godina and Margaret Lundin.  Dora, our school secretary, will be leaving at the end of the school year.  Dora began a new job a few weeks ago, but thankfully stayed with us two hours each morning to help with all the extra work that the end of a school year brings. We will miss Dora and wish her the best in her new career.  Margaret, who had worked in our school clinic for several years, will no longer be working in the clinic, but thankfully will continue to help us with the important health recordkeeping. Margaret will be missed by all of us, especially the students. She has been a caring presence in the lives of these children for a long time.

NEXT WEEK ALERTS: Hot lunch on Monday, June 9th  is Dbl cheeseburger Wednesday, June 11th  is Kindergarten Closing Ceremony at  9:00 a.m. Thursday, June 12 is 12:30 Dismissal and Friday, June 13 (last day) School 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Daycare open until 6 p.m. every day. Last day for Kindergarten in Daycare is Tuesday, June 10.

AWARDS ASSEMBLIES: The Physical Fitness Awards that students have been working toward this year in their PE classes will be awarded at a special assembly on Monday, June 9th at 2:15 p.m.  The awards will be given in the Hall.  Our Academic Awards Assembly will take place in the church on the last day of school, Friday, June 13th.  This assembly will be for grades 1-7 and will begin at approximately 9:15 a.m.  Several students will be earning academic awards at that time.  Not every student will receive an award and teachers will be explaining this to students in their own classrooms.  This is the time for recognizing specific achievements and all students will be recognized within their classrooms for their hard work this year and also encouraged to celebrate with their classmates.

SUMMER SCHOOL REQUIRED LETTERS: Last month some students received letters indicating that successful completion of summer school and/or summer tutoring will be required for promotion to the next grade in the fall.  Please notify your child’s teacher or the school office of how this requirement will be met.

ALL FEES NOW DUE: All outstanding fundraising assessments are now due.  Payment for Service Hours not served (at $15.00 per hour) also due.  Registration for the 2008-2009 school year (if not already rolled into FACTS) is past due. Please settle your accounts with the school office. Statements of outstanding balances were sent home in May.

KINDERGARTEN CLOSING CEREMONY: Wednesday, June 11th, is the Closing Ceremony for our Kindergarten students.  Students in grades 1-7, who have siblings in Kindergarten, may attend the ceremony portion in the morning.  June 11th is the last day of school for Kindergarten and they will be dismissed following the closing reception at approximately 10:30 a.m.  NO DAYCARE AVAILABLE FOR KINDERGARTEN on that day.

Finally, on Friday, May 30th, we celebrated our graduates with a beautiful liturgy and picnic.  The students were generous in their gifts to the graduates. Thank you for your kindness. Special thanks to Mrs. Williams for planning the liturgy and to all who helped prepare for this wonderful OLV tradition.
