OLV Returning to Distance Learning Instruction to begin School Year
Starting the School Year Smart
Issued August 3, 2020 Dear Parents, I hope this email finds you well in both health and safety. While we have been closely monitoring the news updates regarding reopening our schools in the Fall, my staff and I continue to plan and prepare for both in-person and online instruction for our students. On Friday, July 17, Governor Newsom had announced the state-mandated requirement that all schools, both public and private, move to distance learning until our county (Los Angeles) is off the monitoring list for 14 consecutive days. Only then can we resume in-person instruction. As of today, the county of Los Angeles continues to be on the monitoring list. Thus, Our Lady of the Valley school will plan to open the 2020-21 school year with distance learning. We have every intention of resuming in-person instruction once our county is cleared. With this news and the change in the teaching modality, OLV will continue with our start date of Wednesday, August 26. As we have shown last school year, OLV is well prepared for this shift in learning. From our distance learning survey, 97.7% of you were satisfied with OLV’S response to remote learning; a percentage we very much appreciate and do not take for granted. Know that our teachers and staff will not rest on our laurels. We have read all the feedback and have already begun the process of making it even better than what it was last year. I do understand that this has been a difficult time for our families and students. Please know that we are working diligently to ensure that our students can continue to thrive and succeed academically, socially and emotionally. I can attest as a parent myself, that this shift in a child’s education can be overwhelming and exhausting for both parent and child. We are a faith-filled community and together we will overcome these challenges. As we prepare our plans for in-person and/or online instruction in the Fall, it is imperative that you begin to have critical conversations with those in your household that will help support your child’s learning. Although we plan to keep the normal school hours when teaching remotely, we realize that this may not be the reality. This is why I want to ensure you that we will do all we can to work together to find the right balance needed for your child to stay motivated and challenged in their coursework, and feel supported throughout their virtual learning journey. We will be sending all families a copy of OLV’s Distance Learning Handbook at the end of the week. It will have the classroom schedules, guidelines, and expectations that will need to be followed during distance learning. Rest assured that our teachers and myself are working hard and non-stop to plan for a rigorous and structured online program for you and your children while also preparing for in-person instruction for our students' safe return. When we begin instruction online, our students will start the year on a set schedule as we have previously done. Setting a daily routine is very important for our students, and must be enforced to help them transition back for in-person instruction whenever it is safe to do so. The situation is ever so fluid. The announcement from Governor Newsom also comes with revised guidance from the California Department of Public Health. We will be reviewing this revision in the coming days and will follow-up with our local public health officials to obtain further clarity on new requirements. More information to follow. Thank you for your continued support and positivity. God Bless, Miguel Beltran |
